'Shining Vale' Cancelled And To Be Removed From Starz Streaming By End Of This Year

Shining Vale c/o Starz

Say it ain't so! Shining Vale cancelled after season 2 - and not only that - but they are planning to remove it from Starz streaming, which seems excessive. What did I ever do to you, Starz? The series, starring Courteney Cox as a woman who begins seeing and communicating with ghosts, finished its second (and now final season) on Dec. 1.

Jeff Astrof, who co-created Shining Vale with Sharon Horgan, shared news of the show’s end on social media Wednesday. “This show gave me unrelenting joy to work on. Not a single bad day. Please watch the Starz (turns out, Limited) series Shining Vale before 12/31,” he wrote.

Shining Vale earned generally positive reviews for its first season, which premiered in March 2022. It earned a renewal in May of that year, with season two premiering in October 2023. It was less successful in drawing viewers; sources say that was ultimately behind the decision to both cancel the show and pull it down from Starz’s platforms.

In addition to Cox, the series stars Greg Kinnear, Gus Birney, Dylan Gage, Mira Sorvino and Merrin Dungey. Warner Bros. TV and Starz parent Lionsgate TV produced Shining Vale. Astrof served as showrunner and executive produced with Horgan and Clelia Mountford of Merman Productions and Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment. Cox was a producer.

This is yet another example of greedy studios removing anything original or interesting if it doesn't hit insane numbers like Netflix's Stranger Things and Wednesday. Apparently it is not enough to cancel, we also have to remove the content that people lovingly labored on and make it impossible for anyone to watch. This The Shining meets Desperate Housewives series with beloved Friends alum Cox, and from the hilarious mind of Catastrophe co-creator Horgan does not deserve to be erased from pop culture. Stream it while you can!
